Chim Chim Cheree

Yesterday my husband and I watched Mary Poppins with our daughter for the first time. I eagerly anticipated watching her face light up with wonder. After all, two of her favorite bedtime songs are from Mary Poppins – “Chim Chim Cheree” and “Feed the Birds,” and she’s also fond of “Spoonful of Sugar” (which is special to me because it’s the tune my second-favorite teddy bear played when I was a kid).

And, yes, my future dance star was mesmerized by the chimney sweeps dancing on the rooftops, but that was about the only part that truly captivated her. I, on the other hand, was freshly enchanted and began considering whether my husband and I should dress up in English Nanny and Victorian Chimney Sweep costumes (new for 2013) this Halloween. I just love those two. Mary Poppins brings silly magic everywhere she goes, yet pretends to be quite disapproving of nonsense. And Bert the chimney sweep is so fun loving, yet has a beautiful way with words – just listen to his wise advice for Mr. Banks at the end, and his observations of the view from the rooftops of London.

Plus, when they’re on their “jolly holiday,” the two of them have such a charming flirtation. What a great couple costume they would make!
