With two incarnations of Sherlock Holmes back on the small screen these days (in Elementary and Sherlock), that most famous of sleuths makes a great, current costume choice, especially if it’s important to you that people can figure out who you’re supposed to be dressed up as. Who wouldn’t recognize Sherlock’s iconic deerstalker hat and trademark pipe? Add in a caped cloak and a magnifying glass, and you’re golden.
If you’re more interested in copying the modern-day Sherlock played by Benedict Cumberbatch, you’ll need to make a few tweaks to the classic Sherlock ensemble. Cumberbatch’s Sherlock wears nicotine patches instead of smoking a pipe, and he usually favors a dramatic, high-necked black coat instead of a Victorian cloak, though they definitely have a similar vibe. He also often wears a scarf. He doesn’t wear the deerstalker hat in every episode, but he has worn it enough times to make it justifiable to make your costume more recognizable.
Jonny Lee Miller’s Sherlock dresses pretty much like a regular guy. He wears a black pea coat and red tartan scarf at times.
